Brian Reed is a radio show host from Serial and This American Life.
John B. McLemore is and antique clock restorer and lives in "Shittown, Alabama."
Brian goes to S-town to try and investigate a murder that John claims had happened and the supposed murder got away with. Time is very important in this podcast on many different levels. One significance on time is how long people and their families have lived in the town. No one seems to leave the town. Families live there for generations (John's family being a good example). John also describes the town as a place that hasn't really caught up with the rest of the world, and when Brian asks John's mother about how old the are is, she responds, "since time, I reckon." It seems as though S-town is almost stuck in time. Stuck in a time where violent actions can go unpunished, and any sign of existence of the town is closed off from the rest of the world.
Ysrael is a boy who had parts of his face was eaten off by a pig when he was an infant and he is famous for a few things. One is that he has a severe face defect and wears a mask to hide it. He also is a good wrestler and a fast runner most likely due to the fact that he is constantly bullied/hurt because of kids wanting to see his face. Yunior and Rafa are in the campo during the summer because their mom doesn't have time to take care of them when they are out of school because of all the hours she works at the chocolate factory. Rafa and Yunior's relationship is odd. When in the capital, Rafa treats Yunior very poorly. He has is own group of friends and acts very mean to Yunior, especially when Yunior tries to interact with him. However, when they are at the campo Rafa treats Yunior really well; like a good friend. Still he isn't always the nicest, but he will talk to Yunior and tell him many things.
